Dental Implants in Vancouver Kerrisdale

If you’re missing a tooth (or teeth) you have options to replace them.

Dental bridges, or partial/complete dentures are not favorable alternatives to many, which is why you may be considering a dental implant. An implant is used to replace your missing root and support the replacement of an artificial tooth.

When you’ve come to the right specialist, your tooth/teeth implants with look, function, and feel natural.

Vancouver Dental Clinic

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial root that has been manufactured from titanium metal. A specialist inserts the implant into your jawbone to replace the root of the natural tooth. With the implant in
place, the specialist will attach an artificial tooth to the implant, which acts as an anchor to fasten the replacement tooth in place.

Who Performs the Implant Procedure?

This is not a singular effort. Your dental implant is a joint effort between our Point Grey Vancouver clinic’s oral and maxillofacial specialist or periodontist surgeon and a prosthodontist. Our prosthodontist is the one who places a crown, bridge, or denture on to an implant.

Who is a Candidate for Dental Implants?

You are. Assuming you’re in good general health. That mean you have healthy gums and enough jaw bone to hold an implant. This is why it is important to book a consultation for an implant as soon as you have lost a tooth, or had them removed by your dentist. By waiting too long (over 6-months), jaw bone density lessens and you may require bone grafting to make sure your jaw can accept teeth implants.

What Can I Expect During the Implant Procedure?

Your Vancouver Dental Specialty Clinic specialist will determine whether or not dental implants are right for you. If so, take note of the following stages:

Stage 1

Your specialist will insert an implant into your jawbone, underneath the gum tissue. Once completed, the gum tissue is stitched back into place. As the tissue heals, the implant bonds with our jawbone and attaches to the gum. This can take anywhere from 3-6 months to heal. Follow up visits at our Point Grey clinic will determine when we can move on to Stage 2.

Note: In some cases (contingent upon patient’s ability to accept so) the first and second stage (below) of the dental implant procedure can be done as one.

Stage 2

With the implant firmly bonded to your jawbone and gum tissue fully healed, your specialist will attach an abutment to the implant. An abutment is a post that connects the replacement tooth to the implant. Your artificial replacement tooth (or teeth) will then be attached to the abutment by your specialist.

Note: In some cases, it may take more than one appointment to properly fit the replacement tooth to the abutment. In addition, follow-up appointments will be required to ensure that your dental implant is looking, functioning, and feeling natural.
