How is a filling done?

The first step when a dentist conducts a filling is to remove the caries from the tooth, clean the affected area and to fill the clean cavity with the actual filling. The materials used for fillings can vary from:

Gold fillings are made in a Laboratory from order and then cemented into the affected area after cleaning. This filling can last for over 20 years. It is considered one of the best filling materials.

Amalgam (silver alloys)
These fillings are quite resistant to wear and are affordable. However, considering their dark colour, they are more notable than other options such as porcelain or composite and are usually very noticeable.

Composite Resins
Composite resin is first matched to be the same colour as your teeth and is considered for a more natural appearance. The filling is mixed with the required ingredients and then placed onto the cavity and then harden. However, these may not be ideal for large fillings as they chip over time. They can also become stained from coffee and tobacco and do not last as long as other fillings. The life span is typically 3-10 years.

These fillings are usually called inlays or onlays and are only produced in a lab. They can be matched to the colouring of the tooth, and they resist stainings. These types of fillings generally cover the whole tooth, and the cost is similar to the gold filling option.

How to know if you need a dental filling?
The dentist can detect where you have a cavity and will have options on what type filling is best for you. Sensitivity to cold is one of the early signs of tooth caries/decay. Regular dental check up (every 6 months) is recommenced to diagnose such a lesions.
