What Are the Your Teeth Whitening Options?
1. Dental Office Bleaching
Having your teeth whitened at a dental clinic/office can deliver amazing results in a relatively short amount of time. It is popular with those who have tried their hand at over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products and are not satisfied with the results.
Office bleaching is also sought out by those with a hectic at-home schedule and feel that they don't have the time or patience to use a professional home bleaching system. Dental office bleaching is performed under the supervision of a cosmetic dental specialist. It requires the expert touch of a specialist not only for optimal results, but to also avoid injury to the gingival area. In addition, only a clinic with up-to-date equipment is fully prepared to complete the procedure. While the patient experience will vary, the in-office bleaching procedure can take anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes. So does it work?
Below is a general outline of the process:
- Your specialist will capture an image to document the current shade of your teeth. You'll also want this for your exciting before & after comparison!
- Your teeth are then cleaned and polished to remove surface plaque.
- Gauze is placed in your mouth to keep saliva at bay and keep your teeth dry. Retractors may be inserted to keep your cheeks, lips, and tongue away from the bleaching solution. A barrier is also placed along the gumline for additional protection.
- Once set, the front surface of your teeth are coated with a bleaching solution. Whitening solution is commonly formulated from either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide.
- The bleaching solution is activated by a curing light, or laser. Once applied and activated, the solution is left on your teeth for anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes (contingent upon patient need). Your specialist with check the progress throughout, and may need to reapply solution.
- Once optimal shade has been attained, the gauze, retractors (where applicable) and gumline barrier is removed, and the teeth are rinsed. If you experience tooth sensitivity to the solution and procedure, a fluoride may be applied to ease any discomfort.
- Upon conclusion, your specialist will provide you with some after care instructions (foods/beverages to avoid, etc.). Before you leave, it's a good idea to schedule a follow-up visit to assess the success of the procedure.
While there is no doubt about the effectiveness of clinic bleaching, it can fall outside of the budget for some. In addition, on its own, it does not provide you with a longterm solution for maintaining the appearance of white teeth in the years ahead. Keep reading below for alternative options.
2. Home Bleaching
