A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged tooth above the gum line, effectively restoring the normal function and appearance within the oral cavity. Dental crowns are designed to restore strength, function, and appearance when a filling alone is no longer enough.
At Vancouver Dental Specialty Clinic, our experienced dentists and specialists make and place dental crowns. Our goal is a dental crown that feels comfortable, looks natural, and supports your long-term oral health.
When Is a Dental Crown Needed?
A dental crown may be recommended when:
- Heavily filled or structurally weak tooth
- Part of root canal treatment
- Cracked, fractured, or broken tooth
- Misshapen or severely discoloured natural teeth
- Part of a dental bridge or dental implant restoration
Dental crowns protect the remaining tooth structure, improve chewing, and restore a natural appearance. They also help prevent further damage and further decay to the affected tooth.
Dental Crown Procedure
Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to our dental office. The first appointment will remove the decay, reshape the tooth, and place a temporary crown. The temporary crown is made from plastic and is designed to protect your natural tooth until the permanent crown is placed.
At the next appointment, the final crown will be evaluated, and if aesthetic, functional, and fit are satisfactory, our dental crown specialist will cement the permanent crown into place.
Caring for Your Dental Crown
Dental crowns do not require special care beyond good oral habits:
- Brush twice daily with a soft toothbrush
- Floss around the crown and along the gum line
- Rinse with antibacterial mouthwash to reduce bacteria and maintain gum health around the crown
- Avoid biting hard objects such as ice or pens
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
- Attend regular check-ups and cleanings
Good home care helps protect both the dental crown and the natural tooth underneath.
Types of Dental Crowns
There are several types of crowns available to suit different dental needs and preferences.
Metal Crowns
Metal crowns, such as those made from gold or base metal alloys, are known for their strength and durability, making them ideal for out-of-sight molars that endure heavy biting and chewing forces.
Ceramic Crowns
Ceramic crowns, including zirconia crowns, offer a highly aesthetic option that closely mimics the look of natural teeth, making them a popular choice for front teeth.
Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine the resilience of metal with the natural appearance of porcelain, providing a balance of strength and beauty.
Composite Crowns
Composite crowns, made from synthetic resin, are often used as temporary crowns or when a quick, cost-effective solution is needed.
Each crown type is designed to restore your tooth's function and appearance while blending seamlessly with your natural tooth structure. Your prosthodontist will recommend the most suitable material based on tooth position, bite forces, and cosmetic goals.

How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?
With proper care, a crown can last many years. Longevity will largely depend on your overall oral hygiene, grinding habits, and on ensuring you receive regular dental check-ups to catch any problems early. Most crowns function reliably for 10+ years when well-maintained.
Are Dental Crowns Covered by Insurance?
In many cases, yes. Most private and employer dental plans classify dental crowns as Major Restorative and cover a portion of the cost, often up to a set percentage and annual maximum. Coverage depends on your specific plan, the reason for the dental crown, and any limits such as waiting periods or replacement rules.
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and other government plans may cover dental crowns in select cases when they are medically necessary, not cosmetic.
Because coverage varies, we recommend bringing your insurance details to your visit. Our team will provide a written estimate and, when needed, submit a predetermination so you know your expected out-of-pocket cost before treatment.
